Volunteer Opportunities

Make a Difference in Moore County

Volunteers are the heart of Sandhills/Moore Coalition for Human Care. From greeting donors at our resale shops to stocking pantry shelves, delivering food to seniors, or assisting at special events, your time and talents directly impact the lives of local families in need. Whether you can commit a few hours a month or a few days a week, there’s a place here for you to serve, connect, and make a lasting difference in our community.

Gilmore Client Service Positions

The Gilmore Client Services Center is where neighbors in need come for direct support with food, clothing, and financial assistance. Volunteers play an essential role in welcoming clients, listening to their stories, and helping connect them with the resources that can make the difference between crisis and stability.

Opportunities include interviewing clients, stocking clothing and food, and helping deliver monthly food boxes to seniors. Each position is hands-on and provides a meaningful way to serve the community. By offering your time and compassion, you ensure that families in Moore County receive not only practical help, but also the encouragement and dignity they deserve.

Screener

Screeners interview clients to determine their eligibility for assistance. They also facilitate arrangements for food/clothing services and respond to phone calls.  Must be comfortable using computers.

Clothing

Clothing volunteers sort and stock items received from the Resale campus when needed.

Food

Pantry volunteers sort incoming food donations and stock the pantry shelves as well as pre-packaging non-perishable food for clients.  Must be able to stand for periods of time and lift items as heavy as a case of canned goods.

Senior Food

Volunteers contact clients about signing up for the Senior Food Program and deliver boxes of food to eligible seniors.

Resale Volunteer Positions

Moore County Coalition for Human Care

The location on West Pennsylvania Avenue in Southern Pines houses The Coalition Resale Shops and Donation Center, where community members generously donate items that are sorted, stocked, and sold to directly support our mission. The shops are open from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm Tuesday through Friday and Saturday from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm.

Volunteers are at the heart of our resale operations. Morning and afternoon shifts are available, and most volunteers work at least twice a month. Whether you enjoy greeting donors, assisting shoppers, or organizing merchandise, there is a role for every interest and skillset.

For a complete guide to expectations, roles, and responsibilities, please review our Resale Volunteer handbook.

Event Volunteering

pack-the-pickup

In addition to our regular volunteer opportunities, the Coalition hosts several annual events that bring the community together in a powerful way. These events not only help raise essential funds and awareness, but also give volunteers the chance to connect with neighbors, support families, and experience firsthand the impact of their service.

From food drives and community fundraisers to seasonal programs like Empty Bowls, Pack the Pickup, and Shoes for Students, each event plays a vital role in meeting the needs of Moore County families. Volunteers may assist with setup, registration, guest services, or hands-on tasks like collecting food and distributing supplies.

Whether you can give a few hours or an entire day, event volunteering is a meaningful way to contribute your time and talents. Every role matters, and together we can ensure that no one in our community faces hunger, hardship, or uncertainty alone.

Empty Bowls

Empty Bowls is an international grassroots movement started in 1990 to help raise hunger awareness.  Events feature a simple meal of soup as well as commemorative bowls to help attendees remember the empty bowls of those who go hungry each day.  The Coalition’s Empty Bowls event is held in March each year.  Volunteers paint pottery bowls to be used during the event as well as assisting before, during, and after the event.

Pack the Pickup

Pack the Pickup is a community wide food drive held in April each year.  Volunteers work at area grocery stores collecting non-perishable food donations.  The donations are brought to the Client Services campus to be sorted and stocked.

Shoes for Students

Shoes for Students provides new athletic shoes and socks to Moore County elementary school children identified by the school social worker.  Students and a parent or guardian visit Shoe Carnival in Aberdeen to be fitted for their shoes.  Volunteers register students, monitor students before, during, and after the event, and assist with shoe fittings.
