Our History
In the early 1980s, the Southern Pines Fellowship of Churches recognized the need for a more coordinated way to provide assistance to Moore County families in crisis. At the time, struggling families often went from church to church seeking help. While many requests were genuine, the process was inconsistent and inefficient.
To address this, eleven charter congregations joined forces to form the Sandhills/Moore Coalition for Human Care:
- Brownson Presbyterian
- Church of Wide Fellowship
- First Baptist of Southern Pines
- Emmanuel Episcopal
- Our Saviour Lutheran
- St. Anthony of Padua Catholic
- St. James Lutheran
- Trinity AME Zion
- Harrington Baptist
- Temple Beth-El
- Marannatha Church
The Coalition held its first formal meeting on September 15, 1985. Articles of Incorporation were filed with the State of North Carolina on October 4, 1985, and officers were elected that December. The Town of Southern Pines agreed to lease a building on West Pennsylvania Avenue for $1 per year, and on May 1, 1986, the Coalition officially opened its doors.
For more than two decades, the Coalition operated from that original location. In 2007, a successful capital campaign funded the construction of a dedicated Client Services building on West Indiana Avenue—land generously donated to the Town of Southern Pines by Voit Gilmore for community use. On June 22, 2007, the Voit Gilmore Client Services Center was dedicated.

Our Promise
Our Mission
The Sandhills/Moore Coalition for Human Care exists to meet the urgent needs of Moore County residents by providing food, clothing, and financial assistance to those facing unexpected hardship. Through our Client Services Center, we connect individuals and families with community resources, offer programs that promote self-sufficiency, and ensure that no one faces hunger or crisis alone. Supported by generous donors, dedicated volunteers, and the proceeds from our Resale Shops, we work every day to provide both immediate relief and long-term solutions that restore hope, dignity, and stability.
Our Vision
We envision a stronger, more compassionate Moore County where every person has access to the basic necessities of life, the opportunity to become self-reliant, and the support of a caring community in times of need. By combining emergency services with sustainable assistance programs—such as mentoring, employment support, clothing and household goods, and seasonal initiatives like Shoes for Students—we strive to break cycles of crisis and create pathways to lasting independence for all who call our community home.
